Acordion Book Textures

3D Texture & Critique

Soooo.......we were told to exchange group members with other group member and give our opinions. When it came down to my 3D, I had both good and bad reviews. First the good. i wa told that my texture looked very well and they all enjoyed at the dimension of it. The fact that the background lettering was a bit hectic and going which wver way, was a good contrast to the pop ups! Okay, the bad. They commented on how maybe I should have used the corners of the cardboard to have gotten better edges. They also said that they could see a little bit of the glue, but not too much. Overall, everyone said they enjoyed my piece, which is always a plus for me!

Lecture Summary 9/10

Kathy talked alot about creativity and what it can consist of. She explains what all can help us in the creative process. She goes on about the ways we can break down things such as analyzing, flexibility, organization and even fluency. She also mentions how we can get blocks and what may cause them. In other words, just learn to free the mind or distract it. Pretty good stuff.

Cardboard Critique

After all that hardwork, my object finally came together and this was the grand result. The class went through each table and gave their opinion on the different objects. In our table, 3 of us had the same object. It was interesting to see the different directions we took. I mean, overall, we all had the same idea but different techniques to accomplish it. All of our stems were different. There was a strong motion of line in my stem. We were asked to critique all in our groups and they had a dew things to say about me. They liked my overall composition in that it did resemble the object well. My spikes were well placed and they aslo complimented on the distance between each one.

The Exquisite Corpse

The dreaded Ferris wheel leapt a sunny building.

Bright as the sun
Glorious day
For all to see
Who's out to play.
One little ferris wheel
Such a bad mood
So disobedient
And also rude.
Poor sunny building
Didn't see it coming
Leapt right above him
He thought it was funny.

First Dots, Now Squares

We had to draw 14 Periodic squares and 14 Playful. After that, we had to chose 4 of each as our best ones. Of those 4, 2 were the final. One from playful and one from periodic.

                 Periodic                                                         Playful
Final 4 Periodic                                                       Final 4 Playful

Final 2
The one on the left is my final playful. I chose it because to me it's the big 3 brothers about to devour the last kid on the playground. For my periodic, I chose that one for it's warp effect.

Living With Art Summary

I found the beginning of this reading to be interesting. I like how it went into the depth of the story behind Horace Pippins' drawing of John Brown Going to His Hanging. The rest of the reading was very informative. I did get bored at times, I must admit, but was intrigued at others. The painting of the grotesque woman really is not that pretty to look at. I really felt bad if a woman truly looked like that. Richard Haas is another artist that made me wonder if it were possible. Thanks Bill for this reading assignment and I hope I passed the quiz too.

Lecture Summary for 9/3/2010

On this lecture, Bill prettu much went over different types of art. We had the opporunity to give our opinions on the artwork he showed us. It was really interesting to see all the different opinions of everyone. One quote that really stuck with me was when he said "Art is not only an individual expression, but it's a commuinty expression as well."
Bill also commented on how to represent or re-represent a form of art. Also, not to mention the styles of representation. Honeslty, I really enjoyed this lecture.

Oh yeah, and the artwork we had to chose at the end to critique was fun.

3D Project 1

My progress so far. My object was difficult for me to start, but once I created a hollow cylinder, it started coming out nicely. I sliced the cylinder to creates slits and glued triangles through them. They created the spike appearance that I wanted. I then created the hollowness which it consists of and hope it comes out great.

Sorry! I forgot to post my drawings and object! Better late than never, right?

And here are my drawings also........again sorry!

Reading Summary

Two Dimensional Design
Theory of human perception
-understanding how we perceive visual form by organizing its components into a meaningful whole

4 Apects of Gesalt
 1. closure
 2. continuance
 3. proximity
 4. similarity

Interactions of Forms
-position
-direction
-space
  • figure
  • ground
Elements of Compositional Interaction
  • Depth- create contrast
  • Perspective- created through use of lines
Visual Height and Balance
  • symmetry- same sides
  • assymetry- different sides

Critique Handbook
Formal Matters
How one form of work versus another.
Visual Elements
line
shape
scale
size
composition
color
Some good advice in the handbook was to look at the proportions of the figures.
It stated that it is when critiquing a work when formal elements support or undermine it, it could get tricky.
   nonreferential
  self-referential
Formalism- an approach to art (formal matter is the most important aspect of work)
Modernism- looking beyond the actual art

The reading aslo went into detail about more ways to critique and how to keep your wyw out for certain things including the abstracton and ratio.

Pier Mondrian- 'Dialogue on the New Plastic'
This reading was pretty interesting. It describes the upcoming of Mondrian into abstract art. Mondrian depicts the reading as a dialoge between him and a critic. He refers to the critic as a singer and  he a musician in order to use music analogies as his defense.
To sum it up, he writes how "new platic" is judged to easily and needs to be given a thorough critique. Abstraction is another form of art and should be taken that way.

Two Dimensional Drawings
Types of Forms
It states that there are two types of forms. Geometric(inorganic) and Organic.
Geometric is anything with angles, shapes and patterns. It may be a product of nature but still be geometric in that it consists of the above.

Elements of Forms
  • line
  • dot
  • plane
  • volume
 Designing Basic Visual Characteristics
*No matter what type of two dimensional form, it has visual characteristics
  • size
  • shape
  • texture
  • color
This Chapter revisits on the class lecture from Friday August 30th. It defines composition and what it consists of. The similarities of composition and visual compositions are also mentioned. One of the common characteristics is that they both harmony. Harmony doesn't always have to be music, it also can be interpreted as a flow of continuity.

-Simplicity
-Complexity
-Order
-Chaos
These are a few more of the characteristics.

Proportions
Helps the visual appearance of a work of art. Without it, the artwork could possible fall apart. It creates the harmony which makes the piece function.

Ways of Directing and Understanding
  •  Attention and Hierarchy
  • Contrast
Rhythm is a way to create flow to a composition. It allows movement and is nature inspired.

Structure is the appearance creating the meaning and sense if continuity. Structure can give an artwork a different outlook.

Project 1

Top 16 drawings of dots
Final 4 Drawings

On Wednesday September 1st, we were critiqued by our groups, over our top 16 drawings. Of those sixteen, my group was to contemplate and chose my final four. The first things that was said was that my drawings looked very neat. They were referring to the fact that most of them looked like they were in a line. Very organized was another comment. My group did agree that I had a good variety of circles in my drawings. When it came to separating and arranging them into the categories of closure, continuance, proximity and similarity, they had some difficulty agreeing on which ones go where. I noticed that they picked quite a few for proximity. It took a bit of deliberation to finally set them in place but they still needed to pick my final four. A few minutes later, (and some intense thinking) they chose them. I decided to tweak one of their final picks, but agreed on the rest of the choices. Overall, I've got to say that I enjoyed the cooments of my group.
